Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the option to contest particular calls made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
