TikTok Influencers Driving Parallel Market for Unapproved Weight-Loss Drug

A shadow economy for unapproved slimming drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.

Investigational Drug Acquiring Popularity Online

Retatrutide, which is still in research studies, is being advertised by social media influencers for its alleged weight-reducing effects. Viewers are urged to message these profiles directly for supplier links, while also obtaining discount codes.

Thriving Trade on Social Networks

Additionally, a flourishing trade exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of participants share “before and after” images, injection guides and claims of rapid UK delivery. Vendors market the substance there before directing buyers to other platforms for transactions.

Learning About Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an experimental injection developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies indicate it could assist patients lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted digitally as the next Ozempic.

Medical Experts Express Concerns

However, physicians and chemists have warned that the distribution of what remains an unlicensed medication in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could lead to users administering substances of unknown origin.

Several professionals stated the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the increasing cost of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Enforcement

Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the UK, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be marketed or supplied for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.

Some content creators try to sidestep the regulations by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled substance, but advertising and supply can still breach medicines, advertising, and consumer regulations, potentially leading to fines, prosecution or imprisonment.

Service Response and Material Removal

According to TikTok, the service has removed problematic material and banned related hashtags and search suggestions. The company stated it was committed to maintaining the service secure and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.

Online Trading Activities

Research also discovered communities with up to nine thousand members marketing retatrutide using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly brings up channels with thousands of members, filled with images of slimming results, glowing reviews and step-by-step guides for mixing or administering at home.

After minutes of entering one community, a seller shared contact information, where most purchases take place. The vendor sent an guidebook and promised delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the product was authentic, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed laboratory certificate. None asked about body mass, medical conditions or past usage.

Product Details and Pricing

Inside these groups, posts display black plastic parcels with postal service labels, stating to include fresh supplies. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between dry substance containers, prepared at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use pens typically sold at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a injector should last, vendors give conflicting answers ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Safety Measures

A representative for the messaging service stated it regularly moderated harmful material on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Professional Warnings

“People are administering materials they can’t verify. Although the research behind retatrutide is sound, these online versions may not contain what they advertise,” stated Jason Murphy, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the surge in demand to current cost increases for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, individuals are turning to social media. But fake injections are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she explained.

Her team has previously seen individuals injured by self-injection from unverified suppliers. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is gambling with your well-being,” stated the doctor. “These materials could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”

Producer Statement

A representative from the pharmaceutical company stated the substance was in phase 3 research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a company investigational substance not yet authorized … may subject users to potentially significant health risks”.
