This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but inside Together resides a profound examination about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu now.
