Safety Guidance for MoD Staff

During a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister addressed reports that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about classified material while travelling in China-made vehicles.

The minister said that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, but stressed that security is a issue in all modern vehicles.

Our department has a collection of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their car, to avoid having conversations at a secret level in any car, due to the increasing risks of eavesdropping that are present in all automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about safety.

After it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using every cars from China, the minister replied: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Broader Security Context

The announcement follows claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable buses and cause chaos to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russian spy ship has been directing lasers at RAF pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
