Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
