EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
